My dearest Auntie Dee. You were wise, loving and great fun. I have lots of memories of cooking meals with you, swimming and staying with you and Uncle Donal. You were a wonderful great aunt too who will be greatly missed. Lots of love from us all xxx

So so saddened to learn of the passing of Deirdre, a truly wonderful person and amazing friend of our family.

From as young as I can remember, Deirdre was the life and soul of all the get togethers – she would light up the room. Always full of laughter and smiles, with a brilliant sense of humour, Deirdre was also incredibly kind and caring. She was extraordinarily selfless, and nothing was ever too much trouble.

‘D’ was truly one in a million. We have such brilliant, heart-warming memories of a remarkable woman – she will be hugely missed by us all.

Sending all of our thoughts and strength to John & Caron, and the whole family.

With deepest sympathies to John and Caron, and in memory of a much-loved friend, wonderfully witty observer of the human condition and fellow linguist. She will be greatly missed and not forgotten.

My most vivid and forever lasting impression of Deirdre was in the very moment I first met her during the Christmas of 1985. It is still to this day that the picture in my mind’s eye is of her genuinely warm smile, matched by that sparkle in her eyes: D in that moment just radiated such an enveloping warmth and acceptance that the wee nervousness I had felt on the flight from London over whether I would be accepted by Sally’s family simply vanished. It was how D made me feel in that moment and ever since, through all the years and decades we would visit or when D and Donal came over to visit with us in Connecticut that has stayed with me. I know these last few months and years have been a painfully hard journey for John, but he can rest his head each night with the grace of knowing what genuinely good people his parents were.

I have been away and just heard this sad news. I knew D through volunteering together and we became friends so easily and quickly. A genuine, warm, caring and empathetic person. we kept in touch at times of her illness through text. I will always remember her with love and feel a privilege for having her friendship from our meeting as volunteering colleagues.
